Early Childhood Dental Disease – A Modern Day Crisis

Program Outline

Given the critical state of dental disease amongst the Paediatric population, it is essential that not just the Paediatric dentist or the dental profession at large, but rather, all health caregivers now become aware of how to identify and deal with this tragic situation amongst the most vulnerable in our society. The following will be discussed

  • •Prenatal and postnatal aetiological factors that may impact development and occurrence of Early Childhood Disease.
  • •Current medical/dental status of diagnostic and treatment modalities dealing with Early Childhood Disease.
  • •Is it time to consider a new model for dealing with this crisis?

 

Learning Objective

•Identify the timing of primary and early secondary dentition development and the impact of some pre- and post- natal factors.•Defining some of the causes and scope of Early Childhood Dental Disease.•How to do a simple intra-oral dental examination on the young child.•What the current status of professional efforts and methodologies to deal with this situation and problems faced in achieving these goals.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

OLAF B. PLOTZKE, BSc, DDS, D. Ped, FPFS, FICD

Dr. Plotzke graduated with a BSc and a DDS from Western University. He went on to complete a Specialty Diploma in Paediatric Dentistry at Indiana University in 1984. Dr. Plotzke returned to London, Ontario where he practiced Paediatric Dentistry until 2014. Since 1977, he has served on many local and provincial committees, including the London and District Dental Society. Since 1996, Dr. Plotzke has been the Dental Director of the Cleft Lip and Craniofacial Anomaly Team at the Thames Valley Children’s Centre. He is currently a Paediatric Dental Consultant at the London Health Sciences Centre, in London, Ontario. He is also an adjunct clinical professor of Paediatric Dentistry at Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, Western University.
